Microsoft Inc., is an American multinational technology company based in Redmond, Washington. It develops, manufactures, supports, supports and sells software, consumer electronics, pCs and related services. Its most famous products of software are Microsoft's Windows line of operating systems, Microsoft Access Group, Internet Explorer and Edge Web Browsers. The main hardware products are Xbox video game consoles and Microsoft's surface lineup of touch-screen pCs. Microsoft ranked 21st in the Fortune 500 ranking for 2020 for the largest U.S. company in terms of total revenue; it was the world's largest software maker by revenue as of 2016. It is considered one of the top five companies in the IT industry in the United States, along with Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook. Microsoft (the word being a portmanteau of "microcomputer software") was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975, to develop and sell the basic translators for altair 8800. It rose to dominate the PC operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by Microsoft and Windows. The company's initial public offering in 1986, and the subsequent rise in its share price, led to the creation of three billionaires and an estimated 12,000 millionaires among Microsoft employees. Since the 1990s, it has increasingly diversified from the operating system market and made a number of corporate acquisitions, the largest of which was linkedin acquisition sought for $26.2 billion in December 2016, Followed by its acquisition of Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion in May 2011.As of 2015, Microsoft became dominant in the market in the IBM-compatible operating system market and office software market wing, although it lost the majority of the mass operating system market for Android. The company also produces a wide range of consumer software and other organizations for desktops, laptops, tabs, tools and servers, including online search (with Bing), the digital services market (through MSN), HoloLens, cloud computing (Azure), and software development (Visual Studio).
