American International Group, Inc., also known as AIG, is an American multinational finance and insurance company with operations in more than 80 countries and jurisdiction. As of January 1, 2019, AIG companies have employed 49,600 people. The company operates through three core companies: general insurance, life and retirement, and an independent technology subsidiary. The general insurance company includes commercial field operations, personal insurance, U.S. and international. Life and retirement includes collective retirement, individual retirement, life, and institutional markets. AIG company headquarters in New York City and the company also has offices worldwide. AIG serves 87% of fortune global 500 and 83% of Forbes 2000. AIG ranked 60th in the Fortune 500 list for 2018. According to Forbes Global List 2000 2016, AIG is the 87th public company in the world. As of December 31, 2017, the International Group had $65.2 billion in shareholders' equity. During the 2008 financial crisis, the Fed rescued the company for $180 billion and took control, with the Financial Crisis Inquiry linking the failure of the U.S. International Group to mass sales of unheated insurance. The U.S. International Group paid $205 billion to the U.S. government in 2012.
