eBay Inc. (EE Bay, Ebay Stylized) is an American multinational e-commerce company based in San Jose, California, that facilitates consumer-to-consumer sales through its website. EBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995 and has become a remarkable success story of bubble dot com. eBay is a multi-billion dollar company with operations in about 32 countries, as of 2019. The company operates eBay, an auction and shopping website, where people and companies buy and sell a wide range of goods and services around the world. The site is free to use for buyers, but sellers are charged for listing items after a limited number of free listings, again when these items are sold. In addition to the original eBay auction-style sales, the site has evolved and expanded to include: instant shopping "Buy Now"; "Buy Now" for shopping; and "Buy Now" on the market. Shopping by the global product code, ISBN, or another type of SKU number (via Half.com, which was closed in 2017); online classifieds (via Kijiji, or classified ads on eBay); online event ticket trading (via StubHub); and other services. eBay has previously offered online money transfers as part of its services (via PayPal, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay from 2002 to 2015).
