German Lufthansa AG (German pronunciation: [ˌdɔʏtʃə ˈlʊfthanzaː), better known as Lufthansa, is the largest German airline which, together with its subsidiaries, is the second largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers who have been transported. The name of the former flag carrier is derived from the German word Love meaning "air" and Hansa of the Hanseatic Association. Lufthansa is one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance, formed in 1997. The company's motto is 'Say yes to the world.' in addition to its own services, owning airlines of Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurwings (referred to in English by Lufthansa as a passenger airline group), Deutsche Lufthansa AG owns several aviation-related companies, such as Lufthansa Technik and LSG SkyChefs, as part of the Hansaza Group. In total, the group has more than 700 aircraft, making it one of the largest airline fleets in the world. Lufthansa's registered office and the company's headquarters are located in Cologne. The main operating base, called the Lufthansa Flight Centre, is located at Lufthansa's headquarters at Frankfurt Airport, and its secondary hub is located at Munich Airport where the secondary flight operations centre is maintained.
