The Independent System of Strange Fellows (IOOF) is an international non-political and non-sectarian fraternal system of individual fellowship. It was founded in 1819 by Thomas Wilde in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. An evolution from the Odd Fellows Medal, which was founded in England during the 19th century, IOOF was originally leased by the independent system of the Manchester Oddfellows unit in England but has been operating as an independent organization since 1842, although it maintains a fraternal relationship with the English order. It is also known as the Triangular Link Brothers, referring to the "triangular bonds" symbol in the system, alluding to its motto "Friendship, love and truth". While many of the odd informal inns existed in New York City around 1806-1818, because of their charter relationship, strange Fellow Americans are regarded as having founded with Washington Lodge No. 1 in Baltimore at the Seven Stars Bar on April 26, 1819, by Thomas Wilde with some partners who gathered in response to an ad in New Republic. The following year, oddfellows Manchester Unity was awarded the Inn and given the power to create a new inn. Previously, Wilde joined the Oddfellows Medal (1798-) in 1804 but continued with the division of the independent system of Oddfellows Manchester Unity (1810-) before migrating to the United States in 1817.
