Allegiant Air (usually shortened to Allegiant and stylized as allegiant) is a very low-cost American airline that operates scheduled flights and charter flights. It is also a major airline, the ninth largest commercial airline in the United States. was founded in 1997 as WestJet Express, which is wholly owned by Alligiant Travel, a company generally traded with 4,000 employees and more than US$2.6 billion in market value. The company is headquartered in Summerlin, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas. Alligiant Air was founded in January 1997 by Mitch Allie (owner, CEO), Jim Patterson (President) and Dave Beadle (lead pilot), under the name WestJet Express. After losing a trademark dispute with WestJet Aviation Center in Rapid City, South Dakota and recognizing the similarity of the name to WestJet Airlines in Calgary, Alberta adopted The Alligiant and obtained FAA and US DOT certification for scheduled local operations and leasing on June 19, 1998. The company also has the authority to lease aircraft to Canada and Mexico.
